“A Georgia police officer said that a pastor and his family attacked and choked him so hard he couldn’t breathe.

Sgt. Ryan Long of the Lilburn Police Department recalled the brawl while testifying in court Tuesday. Long and a few other officers confronted minister Wilmer Cruz, 38, his wife Cristina, 37, and their sons Wilmer Jr., 17, and a 16-year-old who has not been identified in the parking lot of the church Iglesia Cristiana Evangelica last month regarding a missing person, AJC reported.

Wilmer Cruz, his wife Cristina and their son Wilmer Cruz Jr. were arrested following a brawl with police officers.

Authorities received a call regarding a missing girl that may have been in the custody of the family. Ana Cardenas Robles, the girl’s mother, filed an order against Cristina on March 19, alleging the pastor’s wife ”stalked her and threatened her with deportation and refused to let her have contact with her teenage daughter.” The girl is believed to be pregnant with Wilmer Jr.’s baby.

The officers were tipped off that the girl was at the church and went to free her from an SUV but the Cruz family would not let the officers through.

Long said he placed his Taser on the pastor’s back but his wife snatched it from his hand and directed it toward the officer.

“I grabbed Mrs. Cruz by the arm and told her she was under arrest for grabbing my Taser,” Long said. “She refused and would only say: ‘Jesus love(s) me.’”

Officers were able to arrest Cristina but the pastor and Wilmer Jr. were captured on video tackling Long to a glass door. One of the pastor’s sons was also seen taking the officer’s radio. The incident was caught on bodycam.

“The officer was grabbed by his throat and slammed into the glass, pinned up to the glass door and was unable to move at that point,” Lt. Tim Allen told WSB-TV following the incident.

Long said the family “fought back” because they believed “officers were not allowed to fight back against them.” The officer claimed the family threatened to murder his mother as well.

The missing girl was reunited with her family, police said in a statement. The Cruz family was denied bond. ”

Gwinnett Christian Minister, Wife, Sons Brawl With Police During Missing Child Rescue

Atlanta Journal

“An attempt to rescue a missing teenager ended with a Gwinnett County minister and his family fighting with police this weekend.

Wilmer Cruz, 38, his wife Cristina Cruz and their 17-year-old son Wilmer Cruz Jr. each face charges of obstruction, aggravated assault of an officer and interference with custody, according to jail records. A 16-year-old son, who was not identified, was arrested and charged as a juvenile.

The entire fight was caught on police body cameras and cellphones Sunday afternoon in the Iglesia Cristiana Evangelica church parking lot, Channel 2 Action News reported. “

“I’ve never seen something that could have been so innocent escalate so quickly because of lack of cooperation,” Lilburn police Lt. Tim Allen told Channel 2.

Authorities said they got a call about a missing girl in the 4800 block of Lawrenceville Highway. They went to rescue the girl, who was in a tan Cadillac Escalade, but things escalated.

“As the officers walked toward the vehicle, several people approached the officers,” Chief Bruce Hedley said in a statement. “Officers repeatedly instructed people to stand back and continued to attempt to speak to the missing juvenile in the parked car.”

Hedley said onlookers didn’t listen, leading to an altercation. Some officers were kicked and choked, he said.

At one point, when an officer put his Taser in Wilmer Cruz’s back, Cristina Cruz grabbed it from the officer’s hand and pointed it at him, video obtained by Channel 2 shows. After Cristina Cruz was arrested, Wilmer Cruz and Wilmer Cruz Jr. were seen pinning an officer against a door. One of the sons was also seen on video taking an officer’s radio.

“At some point during the scuffle, the other officer tried to call for backup but couldn’t because (someone) was on the radio talking on it,” Allen said.

As for the missing girl, she was returned to her mother.

“They had my daughter. They won’t let her have communication with me,” the mother told Channel 2. “The lady at the church was yelling at me. They said they had custody from (the Division of Family and Children Services) but it’s not true.””

Week Before Police Brawl, Minister’s Wife Had Restraining Order Filed Against Her

Atlanta Journal

“A temporary restraining order was issued for a Gwinnett County minister’s wife a week before she was seen on video brawling with police officers during a missing child rescue, court documents show.

Ana Cardenas Robles filed for the order against Cristina Cruz on March 19, alleging the minister’s wife stalked her and threatened her with deportation and refused to let her have contact with her teenage daughter.

Cruz, her husband Wilmer Cruz and two sons face multiple charges in Sunday’s melee at their Iglesia Cristiana Evangelica church that injured Lilburn police officers. Robles called officers to the church regarding her daughter, who was in a tan Cadillac Escalade.

Robles told the court the Cruz family took her daughter, who is pregnant by one of their sons. The family told Channel 2 Action News that the Division of Family and Children Services granted them guardianship.

A restraining order was also filed against Wilmer Cruz, but it was dismissed by a judge, according to court records.

Cristina Cruz is not allowed within 200 feet of Robles, according to the order. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Members of the Cruz family remain in the Gwinnett County jail.”

  1. The pastor’s family collaborated from the beginning, the officer asks once of whom is the car the young man answers is my father’s? the officer asked another question where is your dad, the young man answers inside, why? the official gives his first wrong answer without ethics without protocol as representative of the law and rather losing control instead of taking control of a situation, It was the office, the one who puts everything in limbo and escalated the situation and tells the young man, is not of your business, If someone is going to look for a family member it’s obvious that you would ask why? in my opinion from the legal point of view is the officer who alters things and adrenaline betrays him by acting deliberately with screams & brutal aggression towards the family. There is no evidence of his claim that the young boy or pastor took him by the neck and tried to choked him, there are so many cases where the police have abused civilians and have taken out the weapon only to shoot and so many innocent people have lost their lives for the same situation, instinctively the family tried to prevent the use of weapons but it is there where the authority loses its protocol.

The most appropriate thing to do was to take the calm and tell the pastor when it came out that they wanted to talk to him about that matter rather of focusing on aggression towards them.

    • Wow, We saw 2 completely different videos? When your told to back up from a Policemen you back up! This family escalated it. The sons chest comes out arrogant right from the beginning. First do what your told, never do you choke a policeman. That is a Felony! This family isn’t Christian, if anything they should be brought up on kidnapping charges. You hide a child from their parent while police are involved then you deserved all the charges. Hopefully the Church elders will strip this Pastor from his pulpit. This isn’t Christian at all.
