The family and church are known to be institutions responsible for transferring the rules, expectations, norms and values of a given social order to young people.

However reports show that cases of child abuse are rampant within families and in churches.

Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children Director, Reverend Taylor Nyanhete said many cases of abuse happening in those institutions are reported late.

“Most cases and reported late and others go unreported due to a lot of cover ups, and this exposes children to mental and physical health problems,” said Reverend Nyanhete.

While launching a campaign against child sexual exploitation, the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Petronella Kagonye said there is need to effectively engage new churches in fighting child sexual exploitation.

In response, President of Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, Shingi Munyeza said sexual abuse of women and children at family level and in churches shows shocking moral failure, hence the need to empower girls that they are aware of their rights.

Statistics show that more than 4 000 children in the country are reportedly sexually abused on a yearly basis.”
