“A 5-year-old Isle of Wight County boy is on life support and his mother is under arrest.
“The child was not breathing when our deputies got there,” said Lieutenant Tommy Potter.
On Monday, Isle of Wight deputies rushed out to a home on Yellow Hammer Road in Zuni.
“Our deputies preformed CPR along with other life saving measures,” Potter added.
The documents go on to say the boy’s 32 year-old mother, Jaye Hadley, admitted to deputies that she beat her son with a shoe. She then slammed his head on the floor. There was also a hole in the wall. Hadley says the boy fell into the wall, but deputies aren’t so sure.
The boy was flown to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. Court documents say doctors found significant bruising on his lower back and bottom. The bruises left an imprint of a shoe.
Hadley was arrested Wednesday and charged with child abuse.
“This child had some very serious injuries,” Potter said. “Our concern is that — was it one event that led to these injuries or were these injuries inflicted on this child over a course of time?”
Court documents say the boy suffered a permanent brain injury and is on life support.
10 On Your Side learned Hadley was terminated from her teaching position at Grace Child Development Center in Newport News, where she had worked the past 9 months. She now is being held without bond at the Tidewater Regional Jail. She declined a request for an on-camera interview.
“Anytime you are dealing with child abuse you’re talking about those members of our society who are most vulnerable,” Potter added. “Here we have a 5-year-old that should not be laying up in that bed at the hospital. It is something all of our investigators take to heart.”
Hadley was arraigned on the charges Thursday morning. She will be back in court for a preliminary hearing Feb. 8.”
