“A Scout leader who groomed a schoolgirl before going on to have sex with her in a scout hut and in his car has been jailed for six years.

A court heard that he abused his position of trust as a scout leader and “engineered” a situation where he could take advantage of her after becoming “increasingly possessive and controlling”.

He later put the victim through the “horror” of a trial.

Andrew Ranyard, 38, of College Road, East Halton, denied seven offences but was convicted by a jury at Grimsby Crown Court of three of them.

He was found guilty of two offences of multiple indecent assault and one of indecency with a child.

He was cleared of three offences of rape and one of assault by penetration.

Louise Reevell, prosecuting, said Ranyard was involved in the local community at the time, including organising pool, darts and dominoes at a pub.

“He was a scout leader,” she said.

He kissed the girl and would take her to the scout hut, to hotels and out in his Corsa car so they could engage in sexual activity.

The behaviour lasted for six or seven months and happened at least five times a week.

After a go-karting session, Ranyard allegedly took her to the scout hut and had sex with her on the kitchen table there.

Other sexual activity allegedly took place at the New Holland scout hut.

He became more controlling and would telephone and text her all the time.

After he was arrested, Ranyard denied the allegations but admitted that he had sex with the girl on one occasion after she turned 16.

The victim said in a statement that she had suffered panic attacks, anxiety and depression as a result of the offences.

She had suffered stomach pains, trauma and relationship problems, leading her to blame herself for what happened.

She had been a confident person but was now a recluse with low self-esteem.

Jeremy Lindsay, mitigating, said Ranyard had no previous convictions and had been working.

He had disabilities and there had been no further sexual offending.

Sentencing, Recorder Peter Makepeace QC told Ranyard: “You befriended her. You became increasingly possessive and controlling.

“You were hiding the nature of the relationship you were having. You engineered a relationship.

“You were an officer in the scouts. You were abusing not only her trust but your position in the scouts.

“This was repeat offending over a number of months.”

Ranyard put the victim through the “horror” of a trial.

An indefinite restraining order was imposed and Ranyard was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.”
